Megawatt class space fission power system mass modelling

We describe and demonstrate an algorithm for mass minimisation of a fission-based space system.

An Inline Burn-up Algorithm

A new and perhaps more stable algorithm for burn-up calculations is proposed and numerically analysed.

Monte Carlo Source Convergence Acceleration by Hybrid Multigroup and Continuous Energy Neutron Transport

We accelerated source convergence in Monte Carlo eigenvalue calculations by performing multi-group transport (with cross sections generated on-the-fly).

The British Steam Generating Heavy Water Reactor: A reassessment with thermal hydraulic-neutronic coupling

We simulated a British reactor which, at the time of its construction, could have had either a positive or a negative reactivity coefficient. At the time, this was determined only experimentally - modern simulation tools and multiphysics showed that the reactivity coefficients are indeed negative and we explain why.

Stability analysis of higher-order neutronics-depletion coupling schemes and Bateman operators

The stability of several common burn-up algorithms is analysed. This includes using realistic Bateman operators (namely CRAM) and chains of nuclides. This reveals several phenomena which had been noticed in simulations previously but had no easy justification.

SCONE: a student-oriented modifiable Monte Carlo particle transport framework

This paper introduces our Monte Carlo code and the design decisions behind it. We’ve come a long way since then.

Acceleration of surface tracking in Monte Carlo transport via distance caching

A simple trick is proposed to speed-up ray tracing in nested constructive solid geometries. This gave up to a 20% speed-up on finely discretised LWR problems.

Annals of Nuclear Energy (2021)

A hybrid continuous energy and multi-group Monte Carlo method

We allow different energy fidelities in different areas of a Monte Carlo geometry. We demonstrate that the continuous energy region can suffer only a small accuracy penalty while gaining a substantial speed-up.
